The Fine Print Manufacturer Radio Frequency Radiation Warnings

All manufacturers of wireless devices from cell phones to Wi-Fi Speakers To Wi-Fi toys have warnings which describe the minimum distance devices must be kept away from users in order to not exceed the as-tested radiofrequency radiation limits for exposure to wireless radiation.  For example, the FCC sets exposure limits for laptops so they are usually tested 20 cm away from the body.

Why are these Fine Print Warnings important?

If these distances are not maintained, people can be exposed to radiation at levels that exceed the current FCC standard, potentially exposing them to exposures that could have thermal effects. The SAR for laptops, printers, routers and tablets should be less than 1.6 W/kg for any 1 gram of tissue, as measured 20 cm (~8 inches) from the device.  Because of the inverse square law if devices are used closer than 8 inches to the body, exposures grow exponentially.  Thus, at 5 inches it could increase 16-fold, and at less than one inch (i.e. on your lap) it could increase 100-fold.

Will following these separation distances ensure my safety?

No. A “safe” level of this radiation has not been documented by adequate research. These distances only protect us from exposures that exceed our thirty year old outdated government radiation limits. These distances do not protect us from biological effects.  We recommend reducing and limiting exposures far far more than these FCC separation distances. However, most of the public who wants to simply follow government limits  is unaware of the fact that we can exceed government limits with close contact with our devices.

Please see below our running list of RF warnings from the manuals of cell phones and wireless electronics. The best way to use this webpage is to search within the document for the device or brand. This webpage has cell phones and all sorts of wireless devices such as  virtual assistants, cordless phones and gaming devices.

“Exposure to Radio Frequency Signal Your wireless handheld portable telephone is a lowpower radio transmitter and receiver. When it is ON, it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals. In August, 1996, the Federal Communications Commissions (FCC) adopted RF exposure guidelines with safety levels for handheld wireless phones. Those guidelines are consistent with the safety standards previously set by both U.S. and international standards bodies: ANSI C95.1 (1992) * NCRP Report 86 (1986) ICNIRP (1996) Those standards were based on comprehensive and periodic evaluations of the relevant scientific literature. Phone Operation NORMAL POSITION: Hold the phone as you would any other telephone with the antenna pointed up and over your shoulder. Safety Guidelines: 119 Tips on Efficient Operation For your phone to operate most efficiently: ] Do not touch the antenna unnecessarily when the phone is in use. Contact with the antenna affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed. Check the laws and regulations on the What steps can I take to reduce my exposure to radiofrequency energy from my wireless phone? If there is a risk from these products – and at this point we do not know that there is – it is probably very small. But if you are concerned about avoiding even potential risks, you can take a few simple steps to minimize your exposure to radiofrequency energy (RF). Since time is a key factor in how much exposure a person receives, reducing the amount of time spent using a wireless phone will reduce RF exposure. If you must conduct extended conversations by wireless phone every day, you could place more distance between your body and the source of the RF, since the exposure level drops off dramatically with distance. For example, you could use a headset and carry the wireless phone away from your body or use a wireless phone connected to a remote antenna. Again, the scientific data do not demonstrate that wireless phones are harmful. But if you are concerned about the RF exposure from these products, you can use measures like those described above to reduce your RF exposure from wireless phone use.” –  LG Vu Plus

“This device was tested for typical body worn operations with the back of the phone kept 1 cm (0.39 inches) between the user’s body and the back of the phone. “Low power, Radio LAN type devices (radio frequency (RF) wireless communication devices), operating in the 2.4 GHz/5 GHz Band, may be present (embedded) in your printer system. The following section is a general overview of considerations while operating a wireless device. … The power output of the wireless device or devices that may be embedded in your printer is well below the RF exposure limits as known at this time. Because the wireless devices (which may be embedded into your printer) emit less energy than is allowed in radio frequency safety standards and recommendations, manufacturer believes these devices are safe for use. Regardless of the power levels, care should be taken to minimize human contact during normal operation. As a general guideline, a separation of 20 cm (8 inches) between the wireless device and the body, for use of a wireless device near the body (this does not include extremities) is typical. This device should be used more than 20 cm (8 inches) from the body when wireless devices are on and transmitting.” – Samsung Monochrome Laser Printer

“Keep the mobile device and its antenna at least 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) from your body when transmitting. If you have an implantable medical device, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, consult your doctor before using this mobile device. Persons with implantable medical devices should observe the following precautions: • ALWAYS keep the mobile device more than 20 centimetres (8 inches) from the implantable medical device when the mobile device is turned ON. • DO NOT carry the mobile device in the breast pocket. Small children Keep your mobile device and its accessories away from small children. These products are not toys and may be hazardous to small children.” – MOTOROLA XOOM

“Steps to Reduce Exposure to Radio Frequency Energy:  If there is a risk from being exposed to radio frequency energy (RF) from cell phones – and at this point we do not know that there is – it is probably very small. But, if you are concerned about avoiding even potential risks, you can take a few simple steps to minimize your RF exposure. • Reduce the amount of time spent using your cell phone; • Use speaker mode or a headset to place more distance between your head and the cell phone.” – Samsung Galaxy Tab Android Tablet

“FCC RF Exposure Information

WARNING! Read this information before operating the wireless device.

In August 1996, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of the

United States, with its action in Report and Order FCC 96-326, adopted an

updated safety standard for human exposure to Radio Frequency (RF)

electromagnetic energy emitted by FCC regulated transmitters. Those

guidelines are consistent with the safety standard previously set by both

U.S. and international standards bodies. The design of this wireless device

complies with the FCC guidelines and these international standards.

Body-Worn(Wrist) and Next-to-Mouth Operation

This device was tested for typical body worn (Wrist) operations with the

back of the device kept 0 inches (0cm) between the user’s body (Wrist).

This device was also tested for typical Next to-Mouth (Face) operations

with the front of the device kept 0.39 inches (1cm) from the user’s mouth

(Face). To comply with FCC RF exposure requirements, a minimum

separation distance of 0.39 inches (1cm) must be maintained between the

user’s mouth (Face) and the front of the device. Any accessories containing

metallic components may not be used.

“FCC/IC Radio Frequency Exposure The available scientific evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using low power wireless devices. There is no proof, however, that these low power wireless devices are absolutely safe. Low power Wireless devices emit low levels of radio frequency energy (RF) in the microwave range while being used. Whereas high levels of RF can produce health effects (by heating tissue), exposure to low level RF that does not produce heating effects causes no known adverse health effects. Many studies of low level RF exposures have not found any biological effects. Some studies have suggested that some biological effects might occur, but such findings have not been confirmed by additional research.

For models with the wireless WAN function only When Wireless WAN power is transmitting, it may affect the operation of cardiac pacemakers and other implanted medical devices. If a minimum distance of 8 inches / 20 cm is kept between your tablet device and the pacemaker, the risk of interference is reduced. If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, immediately turn off the WAN feature. Contact your cardiologist for more information. For other medical devices, please consult the manufacture of the device.

Do not use your tablet device directly on your lap. The temperature of the base of the unit will rise during normal operation and over time could result in discomfort or burns.  Do not use this device –
