***Science Writer/Editor (Advertised March 2023)

The Science Writer/Editor develops evidence-based, research-informed content with a focus on environmental health topics. 

This position conducts substantive editing and copy editing for content across a range of health communications products and formats, such as toolkits, manuals, fact sheets, radio/video scripts, and web content. 

The Science Writer/Editor must be able to translate technical and scientific material into concise, engaging content and user-friendly prose. The Science Writer/Editor will conduct searches of the scientific literature, identify relevant sources, vet evidence presented in those sources, and synthesize findings into well-organized, actionable content that aligns with the information needs of target audiences, including health professionals and lay audiences.

This position requires familiarity with structuring and carrying out literature reviews and environmental scans by accessing literature databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, PsycInfo, and others. The Science Writer/Editor will also develop literature summaries and create annotated bibliographies and logically structured content outlines to support development of communications products.

This position requires a candidate to be able to produce clear, accurate, well-organized content with minimal instruction or oversight. Collaboration with subject matter experts is expected. 

JOB FUNCTIONS

Contribute to the full range of product development activities, including:

  • Research content in medical or scientific journals and other references.
  • Write, edit, and review content.
  • Research appropriate graphics, visual depictions, artwork and images.
  • Collaborate with translators.
  • Prepare products for various stages of external review, such as field review and federal agency review.
  • Edit complex scientific documents for clarity, grammar, punctuation, spelling, format, and consistency as well as adherence to standard style guides as well as project-specific style requirements and client style guides, and federal plain language requirements.
  • Recommend edits to improve readability, coherence, accuracy, grammar, and conformity to internal and publishing standards of style.

     Additional Skills

    • Excellent written and editorial skills as applied to scientific and health-related content.
    • Extensive familiarity in style guides (e.g., APA, AP, AMA Manual of Style, GPO, Chicago) applicable to the specific content area. Capable of taking the lead in updating/maintaining in-house style guides.
    • Able to work with minimum supervision on new tasks and manage multiple assignments with set deadlines. Able to conceive and implement complex writing/editing projects with minimum supervision and track and report progress of projects.
    • Ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail; strong organizational skills.
    • Excellent oral communication skills.
    • Collaborative skills—can engage with a team of talented in-house staff and external consultants in the development of consensus-based publications.

    Software Proficiency

    • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience using MS Word styles in document development.
    • Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat.
    • Proficiency with Zotero and Mendeley

    Additional Knowledge and Experience

    • Experience writing and editing science and evidence-based content, preferably for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or other federal agencies or contracting organizations involved in the health and human services field.
    • Proven ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature; grade quality of evidence and strength of recommendations; and synthesize independently, with minimal guidance from content experts.
    • Experience developing substantive literature reviews, annotated bibliographies, and other exercises summarizing and synthesizing a range of research-based publications.
    • Experience documenting and incorporating expert reviewer feedback into draft content.
    • Strong history of translating highly technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable content tailored for specialist as well as non-specialist audiences.
    • Experience writing and editing according to plain-language principles.
    • Experience facilitating field reviews, expert reviews, stakeholder meetings, and similar consensus-based content development exercises.
    • Knowledge of public health, behavioral health, and/or medical and scientific communications and information dissemination.

    Education: B.A. degree or higher in public health, medicine, social work, psychology, psychiatry, or health program administration OR an advanced degree in journalism, communications, or similar field with several years’ experience writing and/or editing evidence-based scientific content for a range of audiences. Other science- and communications-related degrees and advanced licensures/certifications will be considered.

    Language: English fluency (oral and written)

    Hours: 20-30 hours per week

    Location: Remote. This position is available to a contractor or freelancer. 

    Pay Rate: Negotiable

    Undergraduate and graduate internships

    We are looking for motivated self-directed students who are passionate about environmental health. If you are pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in outreach and health promotion, wellness, public health, or a related discipline, you are in for a great learning experience working with globally recognized experts in public health, toxicology and computer modeling.

    We accept interns for each of the following areas: 1) EHT General Internship, 2) Research Assistant Internship, 3) Public Relations Internship, 4) Creative Media Internship and 5) High School project Internship. Our home base is in Jackson, Wyoming and we also have offices in Washington, DC; many of our interns work remotely through regular bi-weekly meetings.

    Interns will be mentored by a seasoned PhD and Masters level clinician by regular weekly meetings and communications. Interns will also gain invaluable hands-on learning by being a part of an active non-profit organization. Our internships provide exposure and experiences in a wide range of areas, including:

    Internship opportunities for Environmental Health Trust

    EHT General Intern

    The Environmental Health Trust is looking for a bright, motivated, conscientious intern. If you are pursuing an undergraduate/graduate degree in biology, environmental health, public health or a related discipline, you are in for a great learning experience.

    Description:

    The EHT student projects could include: developing a public awareness campaign; assisting staff on education and outreach to targeted communities; fundraising research; and assisting with research and planning for new projects. In addition, the General Intern will help with daily work at the non-profit office. This position is designed for undergraduate or graduate students majoring in public health, environmental studies, public or non-profit administration, public policy, communication/journalism or health sciences.

    Research Assistant Intern

    You will learn the latest science about radiation emissions from cell phones and from other technology, how that relates to health. This internship provides exposure to scientific research related to environmental health, cancer prevention and biochemistry. The EHT intern will work as a research assistant for scientific research to be published in peer-reviewed journals and analyses posted on science blogs and websites.

    The internship will involve identifying important new findings, updating our scientific database and website and developing clear ways of exhibiting findings through the creation of tables, graphs and presentation slides.

    The Intern should have excellent writing skills, familiarity and mastery of AP Style and scientific citations, a proactive nature, attention to detail and an avid interest in health and science. Interns are expected to be highly motivated, organized, self-directed and open to feedback. Applicants must have a minimum of 2 years science coursework at the college level and general experiences with science writing.

    Public Relations Intern

    Public Relations Intern wanted for dynamic innovative non-profit carrying out cutting-edge multimedia research and demonstration projects on technology and public health. Would you like to gain invaluable experience learning how to write pitches and press releases in the field of environmental health? Do you know how to navigate social media and want to promote healthy habits?

    The Intern will learn a variety of communication and PR skills, including interacting with health organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Indian Pediatric Association, the American Public Health Association, creating press releases, e-newsletter writing and follow up. In addition, the Intern will assist with letter writing, editing and developing materials for outreach that will be shared through social media.

    Requirements:

    Excellent professional communication skills are essential. Interns are expected to be highly motivated, organized, self-directed and open to feedback. The Intern should have stellar writing and telephone communication skills, familiarity and mastery of AP Style, a proactive nature, ability to work effectively in a team and remotely, attention to detail and an avid interest in health and science. The Intern should be well-organized and be familiar with spreadsheets.

    Creative Media Internship

    Would you like to work on a short video or create graphics? We are looking for an intern to collaborate on creative multimedia and creative content to raise awareness in a positive and fun way. The internship is designed for a student who has great ideas, editing and graphic design skills and a passion for healthy living. Interns are expected to be highly motivated, organized, self-directed and open to feedback.

    HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PROJECT INTERNSHIP

    EHT accepts high school students on a limited basis. Are you passionate about learning more about this issue and want to share with your peers both the science and how to aim to practice safe technology? Please consider an internship with EHT where you can design and complete either an awareness project or science communications project. Some students createsocial media videos and others help us as high school research students.
