2009 Karl Mason Award

On May 14, 2009, Devra Davis, PhD, MPH received the 2009 Karl Mason Award – Presented by the Pennsylvania Association of Environmental Professionals (PAEP).

Who is Karl Mason, and what is the Karl Mason Award?

Karl Mason served as Pennsylvania’s first State Environmental Administrator from 1952 until his death in 1966. Karl’s holistic vision of environmental management set the pattern for the state to this day. Karl believed and put into practice the notion that environmental protection is primarily the business of professionals who have the skills by virtue of their scientific training to manage the technical and scientific complexities of maintaining a safe, healthy and clean environment.

The Award was created to commemorate his vision of a strong, well-managed environmental program. Stewardship of the Karl Mason Award rests with PAEP, but anyone may submit a nomination to the Association.

The Award is given to a Pennsylvania person, organization, or project that has made a significant contribution to the betterment of Pennsylvania’s environment, exemplifying Karl Mason’s vision.

PAEP continues to maintain stewardship of the Karl Mason Award. Each year, at the PAEP Annual Meeting and Conference the Karl Mason Award is presented to meritorious nominees selected by the Board from two general categories:

  • An Individual who has demonstrated exemplary leadership in the field of environmental management.
  • An organization, project or program that has made a significant contribution toward maintenance or restoration of Pennsylvania’s Environmental Quality

2008 Rachel Carson Legacy Award

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Rachel Carson Homestead Association has announced the recipient of the first Rachel Carson Legacy Award will be Dr. Devra Lee Davis, Ph.D., M.P.H. The Rachel Carson Legacy Award will be presented to Dr. Davis at the RCHA Annual Meeting on November 19, 2008 at PNC Firstside Center.

“As an author and scientist who paid close attention to the present, foresaw the future, and urged people to act, Rachel Carson left the world a legacy,” said Patricia M. DeMarco, Ph.D. and Executive Director of the Rachel Carson Homestead Association located in Springdale, Pa., north of Pittsburgh. “Carson was a stalwart champion of the environment and helped lay the groundwork for today’s authors, scientists and advocates who work tirelessly to connect the dots between environmental degradation and human health. Dr. Davis has demonstrated consistently through her work and writings that much more must be done to demonstrate the safety of products and to reduce human exposure to synthetic toxins that contribute to adverse health effects. She combines her expertise as a scientist with the eloquence born of personal passion and conviction. Her work carries on Rachel Carson’s spirit today.”

The Rachel Carson Legacy Award winners must demonstrate work that epitomizes Rachel Carson’s environmental ethic: Live in harmony with nature, Preserve and learn from natural places, Minimize the impact of man-made chemicals on natural systems of the world, Consider the implications of human actions on the global web of life.

Designated a National Book Award Finalist for her first book, When Smoke Ran Like Water, Dr. Davis is Director of the world’s first Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health. Her most recent book (2007), The Secret History of the War on Cancer, was a top pick by Newsweek and is being used at major schools of public health, including Harvard, Emory, and Tulane University.

Dr. Davis’s career has spanned all areas of academia, public policy, and scientific research. President Clinton appointed the Honorable Dr. Davis to the newly established Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, (1994-99) an independent executive branch agency that investigates, prevents, and mitigates chemical accidents. As the former Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counseled leading officials in the United States, United Nations, World Health Organization, and World Bank.

The actual award, which will vary in design each year, is created this year by Gary Guydosh of Gallery G Glass, Inc., Pittsburgh, Pa.

The Rachel Carson Homestead Association was formed in 1975 to preserve and restore this National Register historic site and to offer education programs and resources that advance Rachel Carson’s environmental ethic. The Rachel Carson Homestead is the only site in the world that is dedicated to interpreting Rachel Carson’s legacy to the public.
