Position Statement on 5G Released by the PanCyprian Medical Association and the National Committee on the Environment and Child Health
“The Risks to Public Health from the Use of the 5G Network”

The Pancyprian Medical Association and Cyprus National Committee on the Environment and Child Health submitted a position paper on 5G entitled “The Risks to Public Health from the Use of the 5G Network” to the Cyprus Parliamentary Committees on Environment and Health. The position paper is based on the historic Nicosia Declaration of 2017. This action comes at the same time that hundreds of doctors in Belgium signed onto an appeal to halt 5G.
The position paper emphasizes the lack of safety studies, the increase in exposure and the potential interactions of the network with other telecommunication networks. The paper also highlights the lack of a reliable method to measure the radiation levels in real world situations- an issue that was raised in the 2019 European Parliament Report “5G Deployment State of Play in Europe, USA and Asia” which states that, “ the problem is that currently it is not possible to accurately simulate or measure 5G emissions in the real world.”
“Who will be responsible for any immediate and especially long-term health impacts?”
The Associations request the Ministry of Communications and Works to present the implementation plans with estimates of the additional exposure; scientific documentation on health and safety and confirmation of a reliable methodology for measuring the emissions.
Requests include:
- Immediate measures to reduce exposure to the maximum possible extent and the application of the Child Protection Principle enshrined in legislation which includes:
- Protective zones free of 5G for schools, playgrounds and nurseries.
- Mobile telephony needs will be served by the existing 3G / 4G network.
- The need to utilize the high speeds of 5G for any medical applications can be wired via fiber optic.
- The application of biologically safe exposure criteria e.g. EUROPAEM European Association for Environmental Medicine 2016 in the above areas for evaluation of children’s exposure.
- Banning the use of wireless Internet and wireless devices eg. tablets and mobiles in kindergartens and schools at least up to High School
- The promotion of wired internet.
- Support science based public information campaigns to educate parents and the general public about the potentially carcinogenic and neurotoxic effects from wireless as well as addictive behavior in relation to technology.
The 5G Position paper is signed by Dr. Petros Agathangelou, President of the Pancyprian Medical Association and Dr. Andreas Hadjisavvas Vice-President of the National Committee on the Environment and Child Health.
Cyprus already has launched a public information campaign with largescale education signs on buses and the Archbishop Makarios Hospital has removed wireless transmitters from pediatric units.
