February 22, 2024: AT&T outage leaves thousands without service and yet AT&T is requesting to end its landline service in California. Consumers could not make a call on their cell phones and were being instructed to use landlines! AT&T acknowledged that it has a widespread outage but did not provide a reason for the system failure.

Consumers got emergency messages in their community that recommended they use a landline.

Cellular Service Outage – Update #1 –

AT&T and AT&T affiliated carriers are still experiencing sporadic outages. Additionally, Text to 911 and WiFi calling may not be working.  If you need to contact 911 for emergency services, you may need to utilize a landline or an alternative carrier.

This is a message from Alert Gaithersburg

There are reports of cascading cellular service outages among major telecommunication provider such as: AT&T, Consumer Cellular, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. The reported outage has also affected FirstNet. If you need to contact 9-1-1 for emergency services, please utilize a landline.

The San Francisco Fire Department tweeted, “If you are an AT&T customer and cannot get through to 911, then please try calling from a landline. “
Yet AT&T wants to terminate its landline service!
Despite the reality that copper landlines are the best way to communicate in emergencies, AT&T has requested to end its landline service in California. The California Public Utilities Commission is taking comments and more than 3,700 public comments have been submitted.

Dr. Joel Moskowitz sent out his submission to the CPUC re: AT&T landline service

The CPUC must require AT&T to maintain its landline service to protect the health and safety of the public.

1. My Electromagnetic Radiation Safety website (https://www.saferemr.com) documents more than a thousand peer-reviewed studies about the health risks from exposure to radio frequency radiation which is emitted by cell phones, cell towers and other wireless devices. The risks include cancer and nonmalignant tumors, reproductive harm to males and females, and cognitive and neurologic disorders.

2. According to 250 scientists who study electromagnetic fields (EMF) (https://emfscientist.org/) and the International Commission on the Biological Effects of EMF (https://icbe-emf.org/), the FCC’s radio frequency radiation exposure limits are inadequate to protect our health.

3. Based on a statewide survey, approximately 3% of California adults experience electromagnetic hypersensitivity, and many must limit or avoid exposure to radio frequency radiation. The CPUC should provide accommodations to these individuals by enabling them to maintain their landline service.

4. Landline service is essential to reducing exposure to radio frequency radiation. For tips on how to reduce exposure see https://www.saferemr.com/2015/10/tips-to-reduce-your-wireless-radiation.html.
