Smartphone Use at Night Damages Sperm
A new study published in the journal Sleep found nightime smartphone use damages sperm. 116 men aged between 21 and 59 undergoing fertility evaluation completed questionnaires about their sleep habits and use of electronic devices and researchers found that the men who reported using their phone more in the evenings had a reduced concentration of sperm, and decreased “motility” – the ability for sperm to swim correctly.
“The results of this study revealed a link between evening and post-bedtime exposure to light-emitting digital media screens and sperm quality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report these types of correlations between sperm quality and exposure time to SWL emitted from digital media, especially smartphones and tablets, in the evening and after bedtime.”
“Radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitted from mobile phones is one factor associated with these changes, the scientists said, as it raises the temperature of the sperm, interfering in its production,” according to The Telegraph article entitled “Men who use smartphone at night are damaging their fertility.”
The study is entitled Light Emitted from Media Devices at Night is Associated with Decline in Sperm Quality.
A 2017 analysis of over 40, 000 men in 50 countries found a 52.4% sperm decline in men from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Environmental exposures from plastics to chemicals to cell phone and Wi-Fi radiation are likely an important reason for this decline.
Environmental Health Trust has compiled consistent evidence from experimental research, epidemiological studies and in vitro (cells) laboratory, and in vivo (animal) studies that shows that the radio frequency radiation exposure from wireless devices is associated with men’s reproductive health issues including:
- Reduced sperm count
- Reduced sperm motility and concentration
- Damaged sperm DNA
- Altered sperm cell structure
- Increased erectile dysfunction
Animal studies in female animals have found cell phone radiation impacts to ovaries and the female reproductive system as well.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
1. Read the Fine Print
All device manufacturers advise that each device should be held at some distance away from human bodies and brains. Turn the Power OFF on phones, tablets, Mp3 players etc, before they are placed in a pants pocket, suit jacket or tucked into clothing.
2. Prefer Non-Wireless Connections
For phone (landline), internet, printer and entertainment gear, connect by cord or cable with all wireless features off. Turning off your Wi-Fi at night reduces your exposure significantly. However if you have Wi-Fi on during the day (especially with the router near your body in your office) you could be getting daily significant exposure. Installing fully wired systems eliminates this source completely.
3. Increase Distance
Keep wireless devices away from your lap! Do not place your cell phone, laptop or tablet on your lap. Decrease your exposure by increasing your distance from emitting sources. Remember that even if a device is not in use, it will still emit regular short bursts of microwave radiation.
4. Turn It Off When Not in Use
You can easily decrease your exposures by turning off wireless networks and devices whenever you aren’t actively using them. Remember that DECT home phones, wireless routers and gaming consoles all emit microwave radiation regardless of whether you are actively using a device. Gaming consoles need to be completely unplugged to eliminate the radiation output.
5. Practice Safer Phone
Please minimize cell phone use. When you must use a mobile phone, put in Airplane mode/Wi-Fi OFF when not in use and use a speaker phone, headset or a plug-in earpiece. When you use your cell phone do not rest it near your body. Trade in your home cordless phone for a good old fashioned landline with a wired handset and use that more often. Remember that children should not use mobile phones except in emergency.
6. Drive Safe
Power OFF in vehicles. Mobile devices distract us and a split second is all it takes. In terms of radiation exposure, they emit higher power radiation during travel and the metal surroundings create radiation hotspots. If your cell phone is on, do not rest your cell phone on your lap while driving. Place it as far away as possible.
7. Contact all of your elected officials and set up meetings to discuss this issue with them. Ask them to protect your community with action.
What do we ask our elected officials to do ?
- Pass a resolution on cell phone radiation. Click here for the toolkit.
Here Are Some Examples Of Successful Cell Phone Resolutions In The United States:
- Jackson Hole, Wyoming passed a Proclamation of Cell Phone Safety which cites concern over long term health effects as well as the increased risk the radiation poses to children.
- Pembroke Pines, Florida passed Resolution 3362 through the advocacy of Jimmy Gonzalez. This Resolution expressed the City’s “Urgent Concerns” about Wireless Radiation and Health and encourages citizens to read their manuals and it presents information on how to reduce exposure by using a headset or speakerphone.
- Burlingame California City Council voted to include cell phone safety guidelines in their Healthy Living in Burlingame initiative which include the WHO classification and precautions a consumer can take if concerned.
- 2010, Portland Maine: Mayor Mavodenes, Jr. declared October “Cell Phone Awareness Month”
- San Francisco has a Cell Phone Information page with information on how to reduce cell phone radiation exposures.
Letters From Survivors To Share With Your City
- Download a letter from Cally Pivano. She developed a tumor on her leg after years of a laptop on her lap. Learn more about her here.
- Download an open Letter from Traci Frantz. She hopes that you will read her letter at a Council meeting to raise awareness of this issue.
- Download a letter from Virginia Farver, whose son passed away from brain cancer.
- View the slideshow below on Tiffany Frantz and her struggle with breast cancer after storing the cell phone in her bra for 5 years.
- Download EHT’s proposed Proclamation on Cell Phone and Wireless Radiation. We recommend this Proclamation as the starting text to base your Proclamation on. (It is USA specific as it cites the EPA text so if you are in another country you can put in text from your governments health authority.)
- Download The Jackson Hole Wyoming Cell Phone Radiation Proclamation
- Pass a resoluton to halt 5G. Check out Easton Connecticut and Farragut Tennesse who already have done this.
- Pass an ordinace to ensure your town has authority over where these 5G cell towers go. For exampe, Los Altos California prohibits small cells in public utility easements in residential areas and has a school setback of 500 feet. (Read more examples here.)
- Pass a law that creates a Comission to investigate 5G. New Hampshire already has done this. Sample state law here. Oregon also has done this!
- You also can ask local officials to pass a cell phone/wireless proclamation to simply raise awareness about wireless. Toolkit here.
- Ask representatives to request the FDA, FCC and EPA present the studies showing that 5G is safe for humans, bees and trees after long term exposure. Ask your representatives to write a letter to the FCC. See examples of letters here.
- Ask representatives to support legislation that maintains local authority. Revise local telecom ordinances to be more protective of the people. Examples are here.
- Ask federal representatives to demand that the antiquated FCC guidelines for RF microwave radiation emissions be revised to include non-thermal biological effects.
- Ask local officials to host a panel discussion or work session on the issue to inform them so they can develop protective policy.
- Ask schools to install safe wired technology in the school. Examples of schools that are reducing wireless here. Toolkit here.
- Other ideas include holding a public forum on 5G with experts from all sides, full transparency in the process, allowing residents to ask questions to decision makers regularly, putting maps online of all cell antennas and proposed cell antennas.
