As it turns out 5G is not all it is cracked up to be. 5G is a “power hog”. Terrible reception and poor performance plague the network. Here are some resources and recent news reports on the way 5G is failing to live up to the hype.
“We speed tested 5G phones against 4G ones. America’s new nationwide 5G networks weren’t much faster — and in some places they were slower.” –Washington Post The 5G lie” September 2020
“More than half a million Korean subscribers have cancelled 5G contracts because of poor connectivity and smartphone power drain issues.” –South Koreans turn against 5G over poor performance
“Verizon’s DSS 5G can be slower than 4G. We explain why, and how to turn off or disable 5G on your iPhone.” -PC Mag “Here’s Why Verizon iPhone Users Must Turn Off 5G Right Now.
” In 2020’s Fastest Mobile Network tests, we found that existing 5G networks were difficult to pick up, and in many cases, were actually slower than current 4G LTE service. It turns out that we aren’t the only ones who found American 5G lacking this year.According to a study conducted by Open Signal between July 1 and September 28, the US suffers from some of the slowest 5G wireless speeds in the world. The United States was compared with 14 other leading 5G markets, and its average download speeds of 52Mbps were found wanting.” -PC Mag Study Finds That US 5G Speeds Are Slower Than 14 Other Countries
In this video 5g can be blocked by a hot dog stand, Christmas tree and a pedestrian. Although this video ends up being a commercial for low band frequencies (which we do not condone) it clearly shows that 5G millimeter waves are not all they are being cracked up to be.
5G research to know:
- El-Hajj and Naous 2020 concludes, “the deployment of 5G is expected to increase power density levels drastically.”
- Kostoff et al., 2020 concludes “5G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, but will have adverse systemic effects as well.”
- Russell, 2018 concludes that “a moratorium on the deployment of 5G is warranted” and “the addition of this added high frequency 5G radiation to an already complex mix of lower frequencies, will contribute to a negative public health outcome … from both physical and mental health perspectives”
- Di Ciaula 2018 concludes, “available findings seem sufficient to demonstrate the existence of biomedical effects, to invoke the precautionary principle.”
- Yakymenko et al 2020 puts forward three mechanisms of harm from 5G including that the “absorption of 5G radiation in skin can lead to the generation of high levels of free radicals, which in turn increases the risk of skin cancer.”
- Leszczynski 2020 review on the research on millimeter waves frequencies and skin concludes “the sufficient research has not been done and, therefore, precautionary measures should be considered for the deployment of the 5G, before the sufficient number of quality research studies will be executed and health risk, or lack of it, scientifically established.”
- Belyaev 2019 states, “the health effects of chronic MMW exposures may be more significant than for any other frequency range..It follows from available studies that MMW, under specific conditions of exposure at very low intensities below the ICNIRP guidelines, can affect biological systems and human health.”

2020 Study by the Haut Conseil pour le Climat (HCC)
The High Council for the Climate publishes its report “Controlling the carbon impact of 5G” in December of 2020. (Click here for the Report and Press materials)
The study, the first of its kind in France, looked at the environmental impact of deploying 5G mobile phone technology in the country and found that 5G technology will lead to a significant increase in the carbon footprint of digital technology.
The HCC is an independent body tasked with issuing advice to the government on policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
According to the Connexion The HCC report found that 5G technology could add between 2.7 to 6.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents per year by 2030. The report stated that there have been insufficient evaluations into the theoretical positive impact of 5G on the environment, such as a decrease in transport demand, improvements in energy efficiency, etc.
The HCC issued five recommendations including clarifying climate issues before deploying new technologies, such as 5G, imposing carbon footprint limits on phone operators deploying 5G and better informing the public about waste or disproportionate use of energy associated with digital services.
