On March 2020, EMF Safety Network, Ecologcal Options Network and Environmental Health Trust sent a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom calling for Safe Wired Technology for Schools and Homes to protect the health of students, teachers and staff. The letter was prompted because of efforts moving forward to upgrade technology and telecommunications networks in and around schools. The letter cites published research on wireless radiation and calls for wired, rather than wireless infrastructure.

Dear Governor Newsom,
Thank you for all your efforts to keep Californians safe in this unprecedented time of
COVID-19. EMF Safety Network (EMFSN) , Ecological Options Network (EON) , and
Environmental Health Trust share concerns about your recent statement4 as reported by the LA
times, “With many schools closed across the state and teachers struggling to implement online
and alternative learning programs, the governor also asked for an expansion of technology
investments for schools, an increase in Title I funding for schools with a high concentration of
poverty, broadband internet upgrades, grants for teachers to adapt to digital-age instruction…”
If your plan is to upgrade to wired infrastructure then we support your intentions. Wired
ethernet cables provide faster, safer, more secure and more reliable internet service. We do not
support increasing wireless infrastructure in schools or homes because peer-reviewed studies
show harm from exposure to wireless radiation transmitters, such as wi-fi, computers and cell
phones. In addition, peer-reviewed studies show wireless radiation adversely effects the immune
system.
Children are now mandated to attend school via technology at home. We understand every
student needs internet access, however safety must be prioritized. We strongly recommend the
State of California encourage families to set up and use wired internet connections. We also ask
that you not allow 5G, or any wireless infrastructure to be deployed in schools during these
“shelter in place” orders, or at any time hereafter. 5G uses millimeter waves and peer-reviewed
published science shows millimeter waves penetrate the skin and affect human health.
