DAS MEASUREMENT: PUBLICATION OF RESULTS FOR 379 MOBILE PHONES

As part of its mission to control the exposure of the public to electromagnetic waves, ANFR carries out checks on mobile phones put on the French market and ensures compliance of these devices with the regulations . It proceeds to random samples of devices at the point of sale. These phones are then subject to control measures by accredited laboratories, which enable the ANFR to ensure that SARs (Specific Absorption Rate) comply with European regulations.
In order to better inform the consumer, ANFR publishes in open data the results of the measurements it has carried out between 2012 and 2016 on 379 mobile phones . Two types of checks were carried out to assess the conformity of the devices:
- 177 measurements of “DAS head” that characterize the use of the phone in contact with the ear, in voice conversation. They show that these SARs have always complied with the regulations in force, ie less than 2 W / kg. The maximum values measured vary between 1 W / kg and 1.8 W / kg depending on the device.
- 227 measurements of the “DAS trunk” which correspond to a use of the telephone carried near the trunk, for example in the pocket of a jacket or in a bag. The set of measurements also showed compliance with the regulations , ie less than 2 W / kg. The maximum values measured range from 1.1 W / kg to 1.4 W / kg.
It is from 2012 that the ANFR undertook to control the “DAS trunk” given the new uses of the phone related to the recommendations of use of earpieces and the exchange of data (mobile internet, MMS …). However, the European directive R & TTE 1999/5 / CE then in force stipulated that the manufacturers could choose a distance between 0 and 25 mm to measure the trunk SAR. This variable distance, which was not necessarily mentioned in the documentation intended for users, made the controls more complex. In addition, the preparation of a new directive opened up the possibility of updating the standard.

It is in this context that the ANFR carried out, during the same period, additional measurements of SAR trunk: 272 were made in contact with the body (distance set at 0 mm) and 137 measurements at 5 mm. These 409 additional SAR values are also released today. These indicative measurements, which are independent of the distance recommended by the manufacturer, go beyond the norm: they can not therefore be used to assess the compliance of devices. These results were presented by France to the Member States and the European Commission and helped to change the Community rules.
All devices sold in France whose certification file is after April 25, 2016 are now evaluated for the DAS trunk at a distance that can not exceed 5 mm. This new standard is more easily verifiable, while reflecting better the current use of mobile phones.
ANFR will now publish every six months all new DAS measures that it will perform to ensure the compliance of radio terminals placed on the market by manufacturers.
